NEW PLAYERS TO SMGSA IN 8U AND HIGHER DIVISIONS (INCLUDING THOSE MOVING UP FROM 6U) ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A SKILLS EVALUATION IN JANUARY.
This important event will proceed even in light rain. Alternate dates next week will be determined only if the rain is heavy.
Please dress warmly, and bring your player's: CLEATS, GLOVE, HELMET, BAT & Catchers gear (for catchers only).
This evaluation is not a try-out as all registered players are placed on a team. The evaluation is a way for the Managers and Board of Directors to assess each player in order to create teams that are equal as possible. If you played at SMGSA during the prior spring season, your coach provided player ratings that are used during team selection
All Pitchers (8U and higher) plus Catchers (10U and higher) are also asked to attend a Skills Evaluations day. The 6U players do not have evaluations.
Please visit our Player Evaluation Policy page for more information.
Sierra Madre Girls Softball Association (SMGSA) is a non-profit organization run by group of dedicated volunteers. Each year we offer a chance for girls aged 5 - 16 to learn softball skills and good sportsmanship in a safe and positive environment. Over 500 girls from Sierra Madre and throughout the San Gabriel Valley come together each Fall and Spring to play fast pitch softball and have fun with friends.
SMGSA's Spring Ball Season starts in January and ends in May. Games are played at Heasley Field on Fridays and Sundays and practices are generally twice a week.

SMGSA requires that registrants commit $100 per player or volunteer 2 shifts of 2 hours in the diner or at the swag table. Board members and managers are exempt.
The diner hours will be Fridays 5 pm-8 pm and Sundays 10 am-6 pm.
Those who choose not to pay the $100 fee will be contacted at a later date and will be given further details regarding scheduling.
The SMGSA refund policy is as follows:
What equipment do we need before the playing season starts?
Each player will need to have a softball glove and a batting helmet with a faceguard. Optional items include bat, molded cleats (strongly recommended), and an infielder’s mask (strongly recommended for pitchers in 8U+). SMGSA supplies basic team equipment including balls, bats, and catcher’s gear. The team shares this equipment, but you may choose to purchase these items on your own. For more information, please refer to the Equipment Page.
What size ball is used?
Division Ball Size
6U – 8U: 10”
10U: 11”
12U - 16U: 12”
Is 6U strictly T-ball?
A coach from the batting team will pitch underhand to each batter from his/her team. If the player does not hit a fair ball after three pitches, she will have chance to hit off the batting tee. All players present will bat once each inning, regardless of the number of outs recorded.
When should I expect to hear from a coach?
Coaches will contact you before the end of January.
When are practices?
Practices begin at the end of January. Practices will be held throughout the week. Exact times and days will be determined once all teams have been established, but generally speaking, the younger teams start closer to 5:00 pm and practice for an hour to 90 minutes; whereas the older teams start later and practice for 90 minutes to two hours.
When are games played?
Spring season games occur throughout the week (usually Thursday, Friday, or Sunday). Most teams will play on Sunday at Heasley between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. Weekday games typically begin after 5:00. We do not schedule games for Easter Sunday and Mother’s Day.
Where are practices/games played?
SMGSA typically uses the following fields in the area:
For the 14U/16U division (and those with only one or two teams), interleague games may be scheduled requiring the team to travel to other nearby cities in the San Gabriel Valley.
How can I contribute?
SMGSA relies solely on volunteers, so you may help in many ways. Volunteer positions include Team Manager, Assistant Coach, Team Parent, and Scorekeeper. In addition, your help with field preparation before games would be appreciated. We strongly recommend you stay and help with practices to enhance the experience, especially in younger divisions. The drills are easy to learn and with more help, the groups are smaller giving the girls more opportunities to learn.
Where can I find the rulebook?
Please read the Select Page for more information regarding Select teams. Select Team tryouts are scheduled for December 11, 2022.
